The Tradition of Kyo-Yuzen Kinsai, Reimagined as Contemporary Art

Yutaka Shiga is a Traditional Craftsperson who has spent decades mastering the art of Kinsai, the decorative use of gold and metallic embellishment within the tradition of Kyoto’s Kyo-Yuzen.

For this exceptional piece, Shiga personally applies Kinsai by hand directly onto the material that forms the front of each bag.

Against a deep black background, delicate flowers emerge among layers of graceful, flowing lines.

Every fine line, every petal, and every leaf is created not through printing or mechanical production, but by the hands of an artisan whose skills have been refined over decades.

This is not a product designed for identical mass reproduction.

Each piece preserves the individual movement of the artisan’s hand, making every bag a unique work of art.

Traditional Craftsperson — Yutaka Shiga

Yutaka Shiga has devoted his career to the art of Kinsai, a decorative technique within Kyoto’s Kyo-Yuzen tradition.

Born in 1948, he entered the world of Kinsai craftsmanship in 1963 and established his independent practice in 1974.

Recognized as a Traditional Craftsperson designated by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, he has continued to preserve and refine traditional Kinsai techniques while developing his own distinctive artistic expression.

He is particularly known for creating exceptionally delicate lines using gold, silver, and other metallic materials, and has received numerous awards at craft exhibitions and art exhibitions throughout his career.

In 2020, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays, in recognition of his longstanding contribution to traditional craftsmanship.

His exceptional technique and lifelong dedication to the craft have also been featured on NHK WORLD-JAPAN’s “Core Kyoto,” introducing the world of Kyoto’s traditional Kinsai craftsmanship to an international audience.

From a Traditional Kimono Technique to “Art You Can Carry”

Kinsai is one of the traditional decorative techniques passed down through generations to bring brilliance and refinement to Kyo-Yuzen kimono.

At RAKUHOKU JAPAN, our aim is not simply to use this traditional technique as decoration on a bag, but to create a bag that stands as a work of art in its own right.

The front features a Kinsai artwork individually hand-painted by Yutaka Shiga.

The sides are crafted from Kyoto Nishijin textile, while the back is finished in simple, plain black Washi Tatami.

A natural bamboo handle, with its distinctive nodes and organic character, completes the piece, bringing together Japanese traditional materials and artisanal craftsmanship in a contemporary form.

From craft made to be displayed, to craft made to be carried.

A RAKUHOKU JAPAN art bag created to bring Japanese tradition into everyday life.

Fully Bespoke, One-of-a-Kind Pieces Are Also Available

In addition to the designs and specifications shown on this product page, we also accept requests for completely bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces created according to your preferences.

We will first ask you to share several ideas, motifs, or images you would like to incorporate.

Based on your preferences, we will consult directly with Yutaka Shiga and propose designs that can be appropriately expressed through the Kinsai technique.

You may also consult with us regarding the fabrics used for the sides of the bag, including Nishijin textile.

A hand-painted Kinsai artwork by Yutaka Shiga is then combined with your selected materials and individually crafted into a finished bag in Kyoto.

Artwork, materials, and the hand of the artisan.

By bringing these elements together, we create a truly unique art bag—one that cannot be found among conventional ready-made products.

Please note that certain requested images or motifs may not be possible to produce due to technical or design considerations. After receiving your request, we will consult with Yutaka Shiga and advise you on what can be created.

If you would like a fully bespoke piece, please contact us before placing your order.

We will discuss your preferred artwork, motifs, fabrics, and other materials with you, confirm the possibilities with Yutaka Shiga, and determine the final specifications before your order is placed.

⸻

⸻

Ultra-Lightweight — Approx. 390 g / 0.86 lb

The Unique Expression of Hand-Painted Kinsai

The Kinsai artwork on each piece is individually created by hand by Yutaka Shiga.

Subtle differences in the character of the lines, color, brilliance, and fine details naturally occur from one piece to another.

These are not manufacturing inconsistencies. They are the visible traces of the artisan’s hand and an essential part of what makes each piece unique.

The Kinsai artwork is extremely delicate. Please handle it with care and avoid strong friction, exposure to water, and prolonged direct sunlight.

⸻

About the Materials

This piece brings together a variety of traditional techniques and materials, including hand-painted Kinsai by Yutaka Shiga, Washi Tatami, Nishijin textile, and natural bamboo.

The woven texture and appearance of Washi Tatami may subtly change depending on the angle and lighting.

As a natural material, bamboo varies from piece to piece in color, shape, nodes, grain, and surface texture.

The placement of Nishijin textile patterns, as well as the lines, colors, brilliance, and fine details of the hand-painted Kinsai artwork, will also vary from one piece to another.

These variations are inherent characteristics of the materials and handcrafted production. We invite you to appreciate them as part of the truly unique character of each individual bag.

⸻

Care Instructions

* Avoid prolonged storage in direct sunlight or in hot and humid environments.
* Take particular care to protect the bag from water and rain. If it becomes wet, gently remove moisture with a soft, dry cloth and allow it to air-dry naturally in a well-ventilated area.
* Avoid strong impacts, excessive pressure, and contact with sharp objects, as these may damage the Kinsai artwork, Washi Tatami, Nishijin textile, or natural bamboo.
* The Kinsai artwork and Nishijin textile are particularly delicate. Avoid snagging and excessive friction, and handle them with care.
* Natural bamboo may gradually change in color and texture over time. Please enjoy this as part of the natural aging process of the material.
* When not in use, store the bag in a dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight.
