Natural Wood, Nishijin Textile, and Washi Tatami — Distinctive Japanese Materials United in One Art Bag
Natural wood, Nishijin textile, and washi tatami.
This art bag brings together Japanese materials with distinctly different textures and expressions, combining them into a single contemporary piece.
The front features an art design printed directly onto natural wood, allowing the natural grain of the wood to remain visible as part of the design.
Black and gold Nishijin textile is incorporated on both sides of the natural wood panel.
Rather than using the Nishijin textile simply as decoration, it is carefully integrated with the natural wood to create one unified art surface.
The natural grain and texture of the wood combine with the intricate weaving and subtle brilliance of Nishijin textile, creating a sense of depth that cannot be achieved through print alone.
In contrast, the reverse side is finished with black washi tatami, giving the bag a quiet and refined appearance.
The side panels and interior are finished in a sophisticated black Japanese-patterned fabric.
By keeping the overall color palette dark and understated, the natural wood and Nishijin textile become the visual focus of the design.
More than simply a bag for carrying belongings, this piece is designed to be enjoyed as “art you can carry.”

Washi Tatami — A Unique Japanese Material
This bag incorporates “washi tatami,” a material actually used as tatami flooring in Japanese homes, hotels, and other interiors.
Made from coated and woven washi-based material, it offers greater durability and water resistance than traditional igusa rush tatami. It is also designed to help resist mold and the proliferation of dust mites, while making it more difficult for moisture and dirt to penetrate the surface.
Tatami has long been an essential part of traditional Japanese living spaces. RAKUHOKU JAPAN brings this traditional material into a contemporary lifestyle by transforming it into part of a modern bag.
The delicate woven texture and distinctive character of washi tatami become part of the design, while its practical qualities are incorporated into an item intended for everyday use.

Natural Wood and Nishijin Textile
The front art surface features a design printed directly onto natural wood, with Nishijin textile incorporated on both sides.
Each piece of natural wood has its own unique grain, color, and character. These natural variations are intentionally preserved and incorporated as part of the design.
Nishijin textile is distinguished by its intricate weaving and the rich expressions created as it catches the light.
In this piece, the natural wood and Nishijin textile are not treated as separate decorative elements. Instead, they are carefully arranged to harmonize as a single art surface.
Due to the characteristics of natural materials and woven textiles, the wood grain, color, and placement of the Nishijin textile pattern will vary slightly from piece to piece.
These individual differences are part of the unique character of each individually crafted bag.
